Abstract : The approach to the work was to test and further develop two existing technologies; First, the concept of instrumenting an exploration drill rig and relating its operational parameters (such as bit pressure, rotation rate, advance rate, etc.) to characteristics of the rock being drilled was investigated. The applicability of such a system for drilling typical coastal deposits was to be investigated and demonstrated. Second, the point load test for rock was investigated. This test method had produced a proven field strength index for hard rock, which could be correlated with unconfined compressive strength. A comparative testing program was conducted to demonstrate the usefulness of the point load index test to obtain a field strength index for dredging
