Abstract : Due to the complementary nature of DNA, it is possible to use radioactive fragments of DNA to search for specific pieces of DNA. By introducing the DNA in question to a radioactive probe matching a predetermined region, the region can easily be identified through examination by autoradiography. This technique developed by Dr. Southern, can be used to confirm the presence of specific DNA fragments or to search for previously unidentified genes that may show correlations with the radioactive probe in use.
