Abstract : Traces political history of the Philippines, from pre-colonial times to present day. Describes developed concepts of law and order and organized society long before Spanish conquest in 1512. Details continued development during 300 years of Spanish rule. Describes effect of American rule on development of democratic principles during first half of this century. Finally, it describes the despotic reign of President Marcos, his eventual overthrow, and the successful efforts of the Aquino administration to draft and ratify 1986 Constitution. Conclusion heralds maturing of democracy in the Philippines and predicts social and economic success will surely result.
