Abstract : The focus of the Maryland Program is to establish strong experimental and theoretical support for ongoing programs at NRL. Areas of research which are of mutual interest are pursued by members of the University of Maryland faculty in collaboration with their counterparts at NRL. The proposal encompasses basically three broad areas of research activities. The first area deals with excimer laser technology and the interaction of high power lasers with matter (gases, solids and plasma). The second area of mutual interest involves diagnostics of intense relativistic electron beams and study of their propagation and interaction with a background gas. The nonlinear temporal dynamics in neural networks is the third area for collaboration.
