Abstract : A large body of analytical results from CRREL and the Missouri River Division Laboratory was used to assess how well EPA SW846 Method 8330 satisfies the Army need for characterization of explosives-contaminated water and soil samples. About 97% of the explosives-contaminated soils contained TNT, RDX and/ or 2,4-DNT, and these were the compounds found at highest concentrations. Environmental transformation products such as TNB, 2-amino- and 4-amino-DNT and 3,5-dinitroaniline (3,5-DNA) were also frequently observed. Explosives- contaminated water samples generally contained RDX, HMX and/or TNT. Transformation products commonly found included TNB, DNB, 2,4- and 2,6-DNT, 3,5- DNA and the two isomers of amino-DNT. Limitations of the primary and confirmatory RP-HPLC methods are discussed.
