Abstract : A series of static load experiments was conducted on the M256 gun system to determine if clearances existed between its various components and, if so, where. In particular, it was desired to ascertain whether the gun tube and recoil mechanism act as a single unit or if clearances that exist between their primary parts allow the gun tube to deflect as a rigid body inside of the recoil device. Of primary concern are the clearances between the gun tube and piston and between the piston and cradle assembly. The experiments were performed on a gun tube and recoil mechanism installed in a rigid floor mount and installed inside an M1A1 tank.
