Abstract : AKZO's ballistic Arall program has led to the development of an analytic lightweight armour response model (ALARM) which can be used to predict the behaviour of these armour systems when impacted by various projectiles. In order to verify and improve the understanding of phenomena governing the projectile-armour interaction process, an experimental programme was proposed and set up. This report deals with the second and final phase of this programme. The impact of steel rod projectiles into four types of ceramic faced armours with velocities above and below the armor's ballistic limit velocity is studied using a flash X-ray technique. The experimental results are discussed extensively and compared with the ALARM model predictions. Recommendations for future improvement of the analytic model and for experimental research on ceramic faced armours are presented too.
