Abstract : In our ongoing research on the biodegradation of TNT by anaerobic bacteria, we have isolated a number of pure bacterial cultures from an anaerobic, methanogenic bench-top bioreactor that is fed a munitions extract containing TNT as the sole carbon and nitrogen source for growth of the anaerobic bacteria in the reactor. The defined microbial culture we have isolated from this bioreactor totally degrades TNT. Here, we summarize the results of this research.
