Abstract : This report describes the second year efforts to develop a Meissner bearing system for miniature cryogenic turboexpanders used in Brayton cycle cryocoolers. During this period, a permanent magnet/Meissner effect bearing was tested, and a system was developed for measuring the stiffness and damping of superconductor/magnet pairs at high frequencies and low amplitudes (I kHz, 100 um). Preliminary measurements have shown the feasibility of Meissner effect bearing/damper systems for small turbomachines. A new configuration for the bearing system has been conceptualized, and a patent disclosure prepared. The system provides both accurate positioning of the shaft at room temperature and stable rotation at cryogenic temperatures.... Meissner effect bearings.
