Abstract : The development of an optical system for space applications requires that careful attention be given to hardware design and testing. A procedure for developing and qualifying a laser intersatellite communications package is presented, along with the derivation of specific levels used in the successful testing of its transmitter assembly. This general approach may also be useful for the development of other high-reliability optical systems.
