Abstract : This paper examines the Army's individual values of courage, commitment, competence and candor. Each value is examined and further defined through the use of historical vignettes, anecdotes, quotations and interviews. This discussion is followed by sections of selected literary pieces to stimulate thought and reflection on each respective value. The paper discusses the changing American society and the role that values will play with respect to the Army as it responds to these changes. The paper concludes the Army must inculcate its soldiers with these four values through formal education and by example.
