Abstract : Studies in an ambient temperature chloroaluminate molten salt composed of aluminum chloride and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride were carried out. A variety of topics were investigated. The behavior of electroactive polymers, mainly polyaniline, was investigated, and simultaneous EPR and electrochemical experiments were carried out. The stoichiometry of several inorganic complexes ions was investigated in a near neutral melt, and a procedure to buffer the neutral melts was examined. A number of electrochemical studies with emphasis on the use of fast pulse voltammetry at very small microelectrodes were carried out. Finally, the chemistry and electrochemistry of solutes as influenced by the presence of a proton (Bronsted) acid were investigated by means of electrochemical and NMR techniques. Gutmann donor/ acceptor numbers of the melts were obtained, and the behavior of dimethylaniline in the presence and absence of a Bronsted acid was examined.
