Abstract : A numerically efficient method of obtaining the minimum-phase characteristic corresponding to a measured attenuation (or decibel gain) response of a linear network, by means of two fast Fourier transforms, is presented and programmed in BASIC. A method of extrapolating the measured attenuation to very small and large frequencies, as required by the theoretical transformations, is suggested. The attendant logarithmic singularities in the attenuation are subtracted out and handled separately, leaving a residual which is well behaved for numerical Fourier transformation.
