Abstract : The Army, especially the Corps of Engineers, has been involved in nation assistance since the beginning of this country. This study seeks to examine the role of Army engineer units in nation assistance in Third World countries. It provides a general overview of nation assistance and indicates its role in our National Security Strategy. Then, using an actual nation assistance exercise conducted by the 36th Engineer Group in Costa Rica, the study identifies the principles of nation assistance. This analysis yields some guidelines for Army engineers that are conducting nation assistance exercises. Finally, the future of nation assistance by Army engineer units is accessed in relation to drawdowns, budget reductions and government policies.
