Abstract : Modern defence systems must have a comprehensive surveillance capability. A key component of a surveillance system is the ability to detect and to locate radio signals in the entire radio spectrum from extremely low frequencies through millimetre wavelengths. Various techniques are used to determine the angle of arrival of a radio signal and the distance to the source. This often involves complex signal processing techniques. The symposium addressed first propagation aspects with emphasis on ionospheric characteristics and effects. Two sessions were devoted to the description of radio location techniques such as single site location and another two to radiolocation measurements and systems. One session covered signal processing techniques in radio location applications. One session covered classified subjects and will be published in a classified addendum.
