Abstract : This book is a compilation of papers presented at the symposium on 'Complex fluids,' held during the Fall 1991 Materials Research Society meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, December 2-6, 1991. Complex Fluids are systems which contain extended polyatomic structures, of length scales larger than atomic or molecular scales, typically of the order of 10A to several microns. The field of Complex Fluids extends over a broad range of materials, including liquid crystal polymer, colloid, and self-assembled surfactant systems. Some common themes discussed in this symposium include phase transitions, effects of shear flow and electric fields, interfaces and wetting properties.
