Abstract : The stability of inelastic deformation and the formation of shear bands are examined by considering a recently developed gradient-dependent theory of elasto-viscoplasticity. The main issues addressed in the present work are the role of viscosity, inertia and higher order strain gradients in providing internal length scales, as well as the effect of back stress (deformation induced anisotropy) and plastic spin (texture development) on the structure of the shear bands in the post localization regime....
