Abstract : A thin foil of a W-Ni-Fe alloy, 50-200 micrometers in thickness, is sheared for 2 microseconds under plane wave conditions by plate impact. Shear bands observed show more intensely localized deformations than obtained in other experiments. The responses of the constituent phases, the tungsten grains and the matrix, as well as that of the composite alloy over a strain rate range of 10(exp -4)/s to 7 x 10(exp 5)/s are experimentally obtained and characterized by a viscoplastic model. The effects of strain hardening, thermal softening, material inertia, rate sensitivity, heat conduction and material microscopic inhomogeneity, on dynamic shear localization, are investigated through finite element simulations....
