Abstract : During the period covered by the U.S. Air Force Grant we have identified the CuCl2 molecule as responsible for the I.R. and strong red emission in the 'Yoshida' reaction'. The deep potential well of the CuCl2, ground state favours population inversion in the two involved excited states ( 2 delta g and 2 Ti u ). The lifetime of the highest excited electronic state ( 2 Ti u) makes laser action unlikely at 700 nm. But the metastable 2 delta g state could reasonably be expected to sustain a population inversion.
