Abstract : The primary objective of this research was development of an ultraviolet sensitive television type camera that would be suitable for use on a polar orbiting satellite to obtain high spatial resolution narrow spectral band images of the earth's atmosphere in the 125 to 320 nm wavelength region. An ultraviolet camera with high spatial resolution was designed for the AURA payload. After the first year, emphasis shifted to ground based UV observations when funding for a space borne UV Imager was not foreseen in the near future. The existing ground based UV Imager was upgraded and used to observe rocket launches and e-beam excitation of the ionosphere. In 1992, a Princeton Scientific Instruments Digital CCD Camera System was modified and used successfully for ionospheric observations as a part of the Combined Release and Radiation Effects (CRRES) program, a multi-instrument program to observe sounding rocket releases of barium into the ionosphere.
