Abstract : The SOCRATES contamination model is described at length. The model allows for unsteady or steady simulation of contamination aboard a spacecraft via the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. The basis for the model is discussed, and sample calculations are given for an RCS engine firing at 320 kilometer altitude for three different orientations. These calculations are compared to visible data in the 6300 A region which is attributed to the forbidden transition between the O(1D) and O(3P) electronic states of atmospheric atomic oxygen.
