Abstract : These statistical summaries for the upper atmosphere over Somalia are based on 1980-90 twice-daily gridded analyses produced by the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The ECMWF is a multi-national organization responsible for making global forecasts for the European community. Their data assimilation system uses multivariate optimal interpolation, which is able to use observations with differing error characteristics and spatial resolutions. The data is interpolated to a 2.5 by 2.5 degree grid in the horizontal and to the mandatory pressure levels in the vertical. The tables in this atlas were prepared by the USAF Environmental Technical Applications Center's Operations Projects Branch, USAFETAC/DOC, in support of Operation RESTORE HOPE. The atlas provides regional analyses for Northern, Central, and Southern Somalia, each of which is defined on the map, opposite. Each table (two tables per page) provides monthly upper-air climatology at a specified grid point (every 2.5 degrees of latitude and longitude). The tables give D-value (in feet), mean temperature and dew point (in degrees centigrade), mean wind speed and percent occurrence frequency of direction (in knots and to 8-points of the compass), and mean geopotential heights (in feet) for 15 mandatory pressure levels (1,000 mb-10 mb) plus the surface. Except for wind direction frequency, all values have been rounded to the nearest whole number.
