Abstract : A climatological study of South America south of the Amazon River. The study area includes Brazil south of the Amazon, Peru south of 5 degrees south and south of the Maranon River, and the countries of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. It also includes the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands. After describing general geography, the report discusses the major meteorological features of South America. Next, the geography and major climatic controls of each of four major subregions (West Central, Tropical, Subtropical, and Southern South America) are discussed. Finally, each of the four subregions is broken into zones of climatic commonality. Seasons, which vary in each of these zones, are defined and discussed in considerable detail.
