Abstract : This study addresses the incorporation of the effects associated with natural environments and backgrounds in the simulation models which are essential to the development of smart weapons. The effects of leaves and bark in the visible and IR spectral regions is discussed and a computational model is presented for the bi-directional reflectance (BRDF) measurement carried out. A singular value decomposition (SVD) technique is used to justify an important model assumption, factorization of the spectral and angular dependencies into separate product functions. An empirical reflectance model, previously developed, is applied to these data. Since the leaves are translucent at shorter wavelengths, this model is expanded to include a very simple description of the directional transmittance.
