Abstract : We have begun an inquiry into the process of open-ocean deep convection guided by the field observations collected in the western Mediterranean during the past winter. Our goals are to understand the role of planetary rotation in the sinking and spreading of cold water and test our understanding against field observations and laboratory models. Objectives were to understand and parameterize the convective scale in general circulation models and to provide a context in which to design future observing programs for open-ocean deep convection.
