Abstract : This article concerns the effects of non-Fickian water diffusion in fiber-reinforced polymeric composites. The departure from classical diffusion is attributed to the time-dependent response of the polymer, akin to viscoelastic mechanical response. A formulation is provided to evaluate the coefficient of moisture diffusion and moisture profiles within the composite for the non- Fickian case. In addition, it is demonstrated that computed magnitudes of residual hygro-thermal stresses may differ by about 25% from predictions based upon classical diffusion.
