Abstract : This contract was set in place to investigate the technologies necessary to demonstrate multi-hundred-GHz modulation of optical signals. Techniques for eliminating velocity mismatch and modal dispersion, the two major limitations on state-of-the-art modulators, are presented. Further work to reduce signal distortion due to skin effect losses in normal conductors is detailed. Associated problems of interconnects and test instrumentation are also treated.
