Abstract : Advanced materials are being implemented in many Army systems. These systems require new non-destructive techniques for assessing in service degradation. Secondly, techniques are required to assess material integrity during manufacturing. IAP Research proposes a NDE technique based on Brillouin Scattering that is capable of determining changes in elastic constants of polymer based composite materials and composite materials. The change in elastic constants can then be used to predict component mechanical property degradation caused by thermal or low velocity compact damage. In the case of processing feed back the technique will allow for the in-situ evaluation of the effect of processing variables on mechanical properties.
