Abstract : An underwater explosion test was conducted on two closed aluminum cylinders to provide physical results from a dynamic collapse. Axial and side-on attack geometries were investigated in this study. Both cylinders displayed numerous fractures and significant plastic deformation. Finite element models of the cylinders were developed to aid in physical understanding of the dynamic response. Sensitivity analyses of the model parameters were conducted to determine the optimum modeling method. A computer model with failure prediction capability was utilized to investigate the dynamic failure mechanism. Underwater shock.
