Abstract : A water in oil emulsion is being used in submarines as a hydraulic fluid under high pressure conditions. Acute toxicity tests using this hydraulic fluid indicated minimal toxicity. A continuous 90-day inhalation study was initiated to determine the possible toxic hazard that might be encountered from continuous exposure to Naval personnel. The test animals were exposed to either 0.2 or 1.0 mg hydraulic fluid m3. No treatment related effects were noted in body weights, organ weights, or clinical chemistry parameters at the conclusion of the study. Histopathology examination of the test animals revealed no lesions related to exposure. Under conditions of this study, no undue health hazard would be expected from exposures of 1.0 mg hydraulic fluid/m3 or less. F-344 Rats, Hydraulic fluid, Inhalation, Oil-in-water, Water in oil.
