Abstract : A metallurgical evaluation of a failed 81-mm M3Al mortar baseplate was undertaken. The evaluation consisted of the following analyses: visual dye penetrant, scanning electron microscopy/electron dispersive spectroscopy, chemical metallographic, 2nd mechanical property. The investigation concluded the there was no evidence of a defective material condition and that the probable mode of failure was a ductile, fast fracture under high load.
