Abstract : A tapered single-mode fibre optic device was investigated for use as an intrinsic pH sensor. The sensing process is based on the detection of evanescent-wave excited fluorescence energy from an indicator dye circulating the taper. Appropriate selection of dye and taper parameters have allowed the sensor to perform well in harsh chemical environments, with near-real-time response. Future work could include immobilisation schemes for the indicator as well as other sensor types, such as pCa. Further optical properties of the tapered fibre will also be investigated.
