Abstract : This monograph seeks to determine if Americans have consistently favored one form of operational art over another. If we (the U.S. military) do not recognize that a tendency towards one or the other forms of operational art exists, we may unwittingly miss an opportunity to exploit a change in some aspect of warfare. In a rapidly changing world, our military doctrine must stay as close to reality as possible. For the U.S. military to meet this challenge, we must understand why we do the things we do.
