Abstract : Investigations on the in situ biodegradation of nitroaromatic compounds have progressed nicely. Laboratory studies have identified the primary intermediate compounds from anaerobic metabolism to be hydroxyaromatic compounds that are all biodegradable. Studies have identified the environmental parameters affecting the initial transformation of TNT and RDX in anaerobic cultures. Optimum pH and temperature for biodegradation is a pH of 8 and temperatures of 25-35 degrees C. Microbiological studies will continue to determine ways of enhancing the biodegradation of these compounds.
