Abstract : In the aftermath of the Cold War, U.S. defense and acquisition strategies seek to prepare for potentially dangerous regional challenges while retaining the capability to respond globally if necessary. Toward that end, the Department of Defense is investing in a robust science and technology (S and T) program, and the Director, Defense and Engineering, has produced the Defense Science and Technology strategy. This strategy is based upon seven thrusts which are oriented toward significant improvements in warfighting capability. Central to obtaining that capability is the conduct of Advanced Technology Demonstrations (ATDs). These demonstrations range from assessing the military utility of new technological concepts in the laboratory to integrating and evaluating technology in as realistic operational environment as possible. Eleven Key Technology Areas have been identified as essential to obtaining the objectives of the ATDs identified in the strategy. Table 1 briefly describes each of the Key Technology Areas and the remainder of this document presents a corporate-level plan for developing these technologies so that the technology base program responds to the needs of the Seven Thrusts of the S and T Strategy. The primary objective of these technology development plans is to prove out and mature the technologies required to attain the goals of the S and T Strategy thrusts.
