Abstract : We have analyzed the thermomechanical deformations of a viscoplastic body deformed in either simple shear or plane strain compression with the objectives of studying the initiation and development of shear bands. The material defect has been modeled by either introducing a temperature perturbation, or a weaker material, or a void, or a rigid non-heat-conducting inclusion at the site of the defect. The viscoplastic response of the material has been represented by various constitutive relations. It is found that different ways to model the material defect give similar results, and that the Bodner-Partom law gives results that are in better agreement with experimental findings than predictions from other flow rules.
