Abstract : This report presents the results of survey and archeological testing of six areas along Lower Bayou Teche, in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. This project was conducted prior to planned dredging of the lower five miles of Bayou Teche. The objectives of this study were to evaluate portions of three previously identified archeological sites and to survey three additional areas consisting of approximately 88 ac, for archeological resources. During field investigations, Moro Plantation and the western portions of Luckland Plantation and Avalon Plantation were investigated through intensive shovel testing and excavation of test units and backhoe trenches. One previously unidentified prehistoric site, was located within the confines of Moro Plantation. Data collected during this study indicate that the portions of Moro Plantation, Avalon Plantation, and the Bourg site located within project areas do not possess the quality of significance. The Bosler site appears to possess the quality of significance as defined by the National Register of Historic Places criteria; avoidance of the site is recommended. Luckland Plantation, including the project area portion, also appears to possess the quality of significance. The portion of the site east of Station 179 + 25 should be avoided. That portion between Stations 169 + 00 and 179 + 25 will not be adversely impacted by carefully controlled placement of dredged materials over it. Finally, the portion of Avalon Plantation between Stations 137 + 30 and 152 + 35 appears to possess the quality of significance; that area should be avoided.
