Abstract : This study examined the potential for cooperative machine intelligence. Cooperation is a common problem-solving technique in natural systems and occurs among even simple organisms. It is, therefore, a potentially powerful tool for extending the capabilities of relatively unsophisticated machines. A model of cooperation is presented which integrates problems requiring cooperative solutions, mechanisms for their implementation and the organizational requirements of cooperative groups. The biological and social science literature on cooperation is reviewed and found to yield little information about how cooperation is actually carried out in natural systems. Research in the field of distributed artificial intelligence is reviewed and critiqued. Keywords: Distributed computing.
