Abstract : Archaeological data recovery at 31Dh234 yielded information about prehistoric subsistence activities and site formation processes in piedmont North Carolina. The site's major cultural components are associated with the prehistoric Archaic and Woodland periods of Native American occupation. The major contributions of this study are (1) demonstration of cultural stratification at relatively shallow and moderately disturbed piedmont sites, and (2) evidence for the long-term continuity of 'expedient' technologies in aboriginal subsistence systems.
