Abstract : Barriers to effective communication are found in every organization. Hospitals are the most complex of modern organizations, within which accurate communication is a herculean challenge. In addition, they are setting for unique problems in communication - those which result from multiple roles and divergent goals in an industry made up of professionals and non-professionals providing individualized services in an environment requiring technological and human considerations. This study examines the non-physician, non-supervisory employees of San Antonio's VA Hospital in an effort to identify groups of employees which may have similar communication needs. A systematic and comprehensive employee attitude survey, it sets forth specific recommendations generated from an analysis in which 840 employees expressed their opinions and attitudes regarding over 100 different aspects of their work environment.
