Abstract : Improvements in information management and information processing and communications have made the existing Defense Logistics Standard Systems (DLSS) appear cumbersome, inflexible, and obsolete. The goal of the DLSS is to provide standard policies, procedures, and transaction formats to facilitate effective communication of vital logistics information between the Services and Agencies of the Department. To continue to achieve this goal, the DLSS must be modernized to be more flexible in handling information and more dynamic to accommodate operational and informational change requirements. This report of DLSS functional requirements for modernization describes how information technology improvements affect (1) inter-Service/Agency information exchange requirements, (2) requirements of logistics managers for new forms and formats of logistics information, and (3) requirements for additional standards that will encourage effective use of the technology and information exchange improvements. Keywords: Logistics modernization.
