Abstract : Biotoxins of freshwater blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are currently classed as being either hepatotoxic peptides or neurotoxic alkaloids. This study is concerned with the examination of toxins from the species Anabaena flos-aquae, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Microcystis aeruginosa and Oscillatoria agardhii. Areas of investigation include: 1) Culture methods for toxic freshwater cyanobacteria, 2) Extraction and purification of toxins, 3) Chemical analysis of isolated toxins, 4) Toxicology and pharmacological effect, 5) Continued field studies of toxin bloom occurrence, isolation and culture and testing of new toxic strains.
