Abstract : This investigation was conducted to develop a suitable propellant candidate to replace the M10 propellant expulsion charge for the M483A1/M509A1 projectiles in order to gain cost advantages, improved safety characteristics, longer shelf life, and the elimination of manufacturing and loading problems caused by the undesirable hygroscopic characteristics of M10. This report describes the selection of a replacement propellant and the tests undertaken to indicate its suitability, extrusion characteristics, ballistic performance, and the effects of temperature and different charge weights on ballistic performance. In addition, details are given demonstrating the need for the redesign of the propelling charge container based on tests involving exposure to extreme temperature and high humidity cycles and the effect on the ballistic performance of M10 propellant following exposure to these severe environmental conditions.
