Abstract : A series of four sun glint images taken by the crew of the space shuttle Challenger, mission STS 41-G, on 8 October 1984 were analyzed and compared to NOAA-7 AVHRR infrared images and to bathythermographs of the same area. Evidence of the Almaria Front, a persistant oceanographic feature east of the Alboran Basin, was found on all three data sets, and the efficacy of using sun glint images for the location of acoustically important oceanographic features was supported. A practical use of sun glint photographs taken from low earth orbit was demonstrated and the investigation of its use to help in the employment of acoustic sensors is further justified by this work.
