Abstract : Volume II of Phase II of this Canadian study contains the first part of an analysis of the individual military contingents of the member states of the Warsaw Pact. It discusses the national armies of two countries in the Northern Tier of the Warsaw Pact (Poland and the German Democratic Republic) and of Romania, which is in the Southern Tier of the Warsaw Pact. The first two are 'loyal' armies and are fully integrated into the military coalition system of the Pact. Romania's armed forces are considered to be an independent entity, which is coordinated but not integrated with the other members of the system. Originator-supplied keywords include: Warsaw Pact forces; Cohesion; Poland; German Democratic Republic; Romania; USSR; Attitudinal integration; Coordination; and Reliability.
