Abstract : The paper analyzes subject's responses to questions about evaporation processes, in order to formalize different kinds of mental models people use in reasoning about complex systems. The analysis identified three different levels of mental models subjects use to reason about evaporation; macroscopic functional models, microscopic aggregate models, and microscopic molecular models. Models at these three levels are closely interliked: Each dependency in a functional model is supported by one or more aggregate models, and each aggregate model by one or more molecular models.
