Abstract : The purpose of this symposium was to exchange information and ideas, and to simulate new research and development among researchers, producers, and consumers of adhesives for use in the wood industry. Adhesives are some of the most important raw materials used in the wood industry today. With the ever increasing need to produce large pieces of wood from small pieces, to use materials now considered residues, and to use our timber resources more efficiently, the important role of adhesives in wood processing continues to expand. The 1980 symposium stressed the use of renewable materials in adhesives but also reviewed current bonding practices, research needs, unsolved problems, and provided a forum for discussing approaches to problem solution. Important topics included the status and forecast for the future of wood adhesives, the use of renewable resources, specialty adhesives, formaldehyde emissions from bonded wood products, isocyanate adhesives, structural applications, and durability.
