Abstract : Tradeoff analyses were conducted to select an optimum method for tracking armored vehicles and stabilizing a laser beam for beamrider missile guidance, for a manportable infantry weapon. The optimum approach was found to be a two-axis gimbal-mounted infrared sensor and laser projector, with IR image autotrack and gyro stabilization. A breadboard example was built and tested, demonstrating the practicality and indicating expected performance of the recommended method. (Author)
