Abstract : Recent advances in systems concepts allied to new technology have led to the possibility of integrating a variety of systems that have traditionally been separate. In this symposium, the potential, and problems, of integrating mission critical and flight critical systems are examined. Such integrated systems can be expected to improve the performance of an aircraft in all phases of a mission. During the enroute and return phases fuel conservation flight profiles may be available. Prior to an attack energy management profiles will be available to maximise the energy of the attacker, and during the attack phase integrated fire and flight control will maximise the firing opportunities. Similar considerations apply to missiles and other unmanned vehicles. In addition, integration of these control systems is expected to provide enhancements of flight safety by reducing pilot workload. A further improvement in survivability is also to expected from the use of curved attack profiles in both air-to-air and air-to-ground attacks particularly when such systems are coupled to direct force controls or vectored thrust controls.
