Abstract : The purpose of this report is to provide dental staff personnel with a more comprehensive knowledge of the design and function of central dental evacuation systems; establish working details for the most efficient and cost-effective dental evacuation systems consistent with present and projected military dental practice requirements; provide clear, concise equipment configuration and performance requirements as guidance to health facilities offices so that they may closely supervise planning for central dental evacuation systems; and provide procurement, installation, and performance criteria to contractors to assure delivery of equipment consistent with quality design, longevity, and clinical performance. Four central dental evacuation systems (identified by AFM 88-50, Criteria for Design and Construction of Air Force Health Facilities) are discussed. Part I of this report includes the theory of vacuum operation, the details of the systems, their component parts, and their function. Part II presents specifications, design guidance, acceptance testing, and utilities requirements. Sufficient detail is provided to permit identification of well-designed systems and components as well as of those that do not meet U.S. Air Force requirements. A glossary of definitions and abbreviations is included at the end of the report to enhance comprehension of the systems' descriptions, specifications, and design guidance.
